Ā This Crochet stitch tutorial shows you how to crochet the tri-colour Speckle stitch. I learned this from my trusty 1970ās Mon Tricot knitting and crochet dictionary which is also where the name comes from. It’s the perfect crochet stitch for face cloths and hand towels as it is squishy and absorbent and great for using up yarn scraps.
You will need
crochet hookĀ 3.5mm
Pattern (US terms)
Row 1 :Ā Ch a multiple of 6Ā sts, plus 2, turnĀ
Row 2 :Ā (Color 1 )Ā Ch 2, Ā dc 1 into 3rd ch (ch 2 counts for 1st dc), *ch 2, sk 2 sts, dc 2* Ā repeat from * to * till last two stitches, 2dc. In the 2nd dc as you pull through the yarn for the final part of the stitch take the next color (color 2) and pull through the final loop of the dc to join the new color ready for the next row.
Row 3 :Ā ( color 2) Ch 2, 1dc into missed stitches of row 1, to cover 2ch space, continue repeating 2ch, 2dc into 2ch space below across the row. At end of row, dc 1, ch 2 then hdc 1 into 2nd ch of the previous row.
TIP : Carry yarn up sides of work by placing yarn colors from below rows over the top of new color before working the row.
Row 4 :Ā (join color 3) Ch 1, *2dc in 2dc of row 1, ch 2* repeat from * to * to last 2 stitches, 2dc
Row 5:Ā Start again from row 2, working dc into dc of row 3
Continue repeating rows 2-5 until you have your desired length. Colors can be varied according to taste. Just make sure each row has a different colour. I chose seven colours and just repeated the pattern.
