On my trip to Japan I made four of these fast crochet projects. I also used the items I made during my trip because it was cold  and the bottle holder was also very useful. I hope you also find these crochet patterns for holidays useful when you travel!

It’s hard to decide how much yarn and what projects to bring on a trip, so this time I decided to bring a few balls of some beautiful 4ply alpaca. It’s so light, but warm, and was ideal for both the gloves and the scarf.

I also brought a few balls of Paintbox  cotton 8ply (DK). I always use 8 ply (DK) cotton for bottle holders because it is sturdy and strong as they need to be hardwearing.

For the infinity scarf you can use any thickish acrylic or wool. I picked up the gorgeous variegated hand dyed yarn in Japan, but it turned out to be actually from Tasmania (not far from Melbourne!) and hand dyed in Japan!

Make sure you bring a crochet hook, tapestry needle and scissors with you. However you should pack your scissors in the suitcase not your carry on, or they will be taken off you!

See below for some  easy patterns you can crochet for holidays. They’re fairly standard ideas, but I have made them to suit myself. As always, if you have any questions please ask here or on my Instagram @crochetlovemelbourne

  1. Lacy Beginner  scarf

This is so easy to make it’s crazy. I literally thought of it on the plane because I wanted to use only one ball of the 4 ply alpaca, so I had to make a small accessory.  This easy and super fast scarf is more of a fashion accessory than something to keep you warm. You could make it in any thickness and type of wool and alter the number of stitches and the length of course.

Row 1: Ch 35 ( or adjust to desired length, multiple of five sts)

Row 2 : sc into 5th ch, *ch5, sk4 sc into next stitch * until final stitch (7 loops, 2 small at each end and 5 larger)

Row 3: * sc into next ch 5 space, ch 5* repeat from * to * till end of the row ch 5, turn

Repeat Row 3 until desired scarf length, fasten off and weave in ends

  1. Infinity beginner scarf

I have shared the directions for this type of infinity scarf in a few Instagram posts on @crochetlovemelbourne in the past few years,  however I think it is worth repeating here because these scarves are so easy to make and so useful!

There are numerous free patterns for this  type of infinity scarf around.  My way of making them is to use foundation hdc to make the bottom of the scarf nice and stretchy.

A fabulous tutorial for the hdc foundation stitch can be found @emmeclairecrochet. I make a hdc foundation chain long enough around to wrap loosely around my neck a few times.

Then I just work about 8-10 rounds of hdc into the back loop. This makes the line you can see in the rounds. If you want both stitches to stick out more  like a camel stitch, then crochet in the third loop at the back which makes both stitches more defined. In this scarf I did a few rows at the start and end in the third loop. Then the middle rows in the back or second loop, hope that makes sense!

I love making these scarves because they’re so useful and easy.

  1. Fingerless gloves

I made these on the plane then wore them every day of my trip! You make a long rectangle and make it wide enough to wrap around your hand.

Fingerless gloves pattern instructions

Row 1: Ch 70 (or length desired from top of hands to wrist/arm where you want them to end)

Rows 2- : hdc into the back loop along the chain which creates the knitted rib effect, ch 2, turn

Repeat row 2 until the rectangle wraps just around your hand, it should be relatively tight fitting.

Fasten off

Wrap around hand and measure up to where you want the thumb hole. Sew up to thumb hole, fasten off, leave hole and sew to top of gloves. Repeat for the opposite side and have fun wearing your gloves!

  1. Bottle holder

To make this bottle holder I just used the pattern you can find here in  my Etsy shop for the pattern of my granny square bottle holder. I recommend using Paintbox cotton as it is good quality with a wide variety of colours.  You can make it with or without a pocket.

I hope you enjoyed making these fast and easy crochet patterns for holidays!
